Measuring Social Engagement in Your Community: Understanding levels of social engagement is critical to organizations that are working to combat social isolation among older adults in their communities. Many of the tools that are used to measure levels of social engagement among older adults are based on the UCLA Loneliness Scale. Developed by the University of California, Los Angeles and first published in 1978, this scale consists of a series of 20 questions that assess the degree of loneliness or engagement among older adults. In addition to the UCLA Loneliness Scale, many shorter surveys can be used to conduct individual assessments in person, over the phone or independently.

Here is a link to a webpage (on the Washington University in St. Louis - Center for Social Development's website) which lists a set of excellent publications (from 2008-2011) on Experience Corps' well-regarded, evidence-based tutoring program that placed older adults in public schools to help students who have been identified as poor readers. The researchers found positive health outcomes for participating students as well as the older adults who provided the tutoring.
Created in 2019 (and updated in 2022) by Dr. Shannon Jarrott with support from The Eisner Foundation, includes over 20 reliable and valid outcome measures that have been used in the evaluation of intergenerational programs. This Toolkit represents over 15 years of collaborative research by Dr. Jarrott.
