Children and youth are born ready to explore. Many schools and out-of-school time (OST) programs now emphasize an inquiry-based style of learning. What does it take to support OST active STEM experiences? This module includes many hands-on program ideas, information on the emerging Maker Movement, and exercises that guide facilitators as they integrate active investigations into the curriculum. Objectives

  • Describe the characteristics that make a science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) learning experience active and engaging.
  • Identify personal teaching preferences and how they impact an adult's ability to facilitate active STEM explorations.
  • Utilize math, geometry, spatial design, and use of materials skills to create a simple kite.
  • Identify one revision to make to a current STEM programming approach to make it more active--more hands-on/minds-on authentic inquiry.
