Although the number of young children who live in poverty decreased slightly in 2014, research shows that one in five children under the age of five lives in poverty and one in nine lives in extreme poverty. Awareness of issues related to poverty and use of effective communication strategies are essential for early care and education professionals to be able to build relationships with families and connect them to the supports they need.
