This lesson focuses on forming and sustaining relationships with children and families. Relationships play a critical role in social-emotional development beginning in infancy. You will consider ways to build positive, nurturing, responsive and dependable relationships with the young children in your care. This module introduces evidence-based practices for use with infants and toddlers suggested by the Center on the Social and Emotional Foundations for of Early Learning (CSEFEL). (2 hours)

Objectives

  • Define social-emotional development and describe how it unfolds in the context of caregiving relationships.
  • Reflect on how culture (perceptions, beliefs, values) influences caregiving, parenting and the social-emotional development of infants and toddlers.
  • Describe how very young children's behavior and communication is meaningful.
  • Use a variety of strategies, including self-reflection and observation, to increase your capacity to support social-emotional development by forming positive relationships with infants, toddlers and their families.
