Adult leaders who work with children and youth ages 5-18 in OST settings need awareness for how culture might affect children’s development. Cultural factors include race/ethnicity, national origin, language, gender identity/sexual orientation, age, physical/developmental ability, family type, geographic area, religion, and socioeconomic status. Develop knowledge and skills to create an atmosphere that is welcoming, respectful, and promotes cultural competency for all. (2 hours)

Objectives
- Explain the elements that come together to define culture, and what cultural competency means.
- Understand the impact of culture on self-concept, identity development, and learning for school-age youth.
- Identify the attitudes, knowledge, and skills adult leaders need in order to create an atmosphere that is welcoming and responsive to all children.
- Outline habits and practices that continually improve personal cultural competence as well as the cultural competence of the children and youth of an OST program.
