This lesson covers ways to advocate for and support children with disabilities. As an advocate for children you need to be knowledgeable about the rights, responsibilities, and resources available to children. Discover ways to connect parents and families of children with disabilities to services and empower them to be advocates for their children. (2 hours)

Lesson objectives

  • Have a basic understanding of the rights and responsibilities that govern accessibility (physical space, programs, services) for children with disabilities.
  • Learn how and what to tell about a child's story when working to get services for the child.
  • Identify ways to support families of children with disabilities through mentoring, guiding, and teaching; encourage them to ask for more for their child; and help them to tell their child's story.
