Keynote Presenter: Deborah Langosch, Ph.D., LCSW

  • Keynote presentation title: Promoting the Emotional Well-Being of Kincare Families
  • Description: Children living with relatives have endured separations from their parents and many were exposed to traumatic events. These can create emotional challenges, disruptions in attachments and difficulty with coping, behavior and beliefs. This presentation will focus on identifying the impact of these events on the child and caregiver, how to understand the meaning of them, what providers can do to help and what treatment options, services and resources are available to address mental health issues. It will also describe protective factors and consider how to build resiliency and highlight strengths to best support kincare families.

The four mini-presentations that are part of the rotating roundtables segment:

  • Mental health (Deborah Langosch will extend and build upon the conversation generated from her keynote on "promoting the emotional well-being of kincare families.)
  • Research-informed program development (Kristina Brant will discuss best practices for researcher-practitioner partnerships and provide examples of how research can inform the co-creation of innovative programs to support kinship families.)
  • Information exchange, networks, and kinship navigator systems (Kathy Dial and Sarah Smalls will share their experiences and lessons learned in connection with the Statewide Kinship Task Force for the Commonwealth of Virginia and other networking and navigator systems.)
