Mary Kate (Kate) Berardi

Dr. Berardi is an educator and researcher committed to strengthening communities through education, empathy, and meaningful engagement. With more than 18 years of experience in formal and non-formal education, her work focuses on community development, empathy and mindfulness education, curriculum innovation, and youth leadership development.

As the Community and Economic Development (CEDEV) Director of Graduate Studies in Penn State’s Department of Agricultural Economics, Sociology, and Education (AESE), Dr. Berardi supports students in connecting theory with practice and developing the knowledge and skills needed to create meaningful change in their communities. Her teaching and research emphasize the importance of human connection, inclusive participation, and education as a catalyst for individual and community development.

Prior to joining the AESE faculty, Dr. Berardi spent time working in formal and non-formal educational settings, experiences that continue to inform her approach to teaching, research, and program leadership. Her scholarly interests include empathy and mindfulness education, curriculum design, non-formal education program development, and educational program evaluation. She has also developed collaborations with organizations such as the Fred Rogers Center and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), advancing initiatives that promote empathy, youth engagement, and community connection.

Dr. Berardi earned her Ph.D. in Agricultural and Extension Education from Penn State in 2020. Across her work, she remains committed to designing educational experiences that empower individuals, strengthen relationships, and contribute to more connected and resilient communities.

Outside of her professional life, Dr. Berardi enjoys spending time with her family and many pets and finding opportunities to reconnect with nature.
