TITLE:  Communications Strategist

FOCUS: Lead the charge to align the who, what, where, when, why and how for PASA’s internal and external communications

AVAILABILITY:  Mid to Late January 2018

PASA MISSION STATEMENT: PASA is a community of farmers and supporters, focused on education and evidence-based research, for the purpose of building a more economically-just, environmentally-regenerative, and community-focused food system.

INTRODUCTION: PASA is one of the largest and most active sustainable agriculture organizations in the U.S. Our network of more than 6,400 members connects farmers, agricultural professionals, and sustainability supporters from “farm to fork.” Through our SOIL Institute education and research programs, we bring farmers together for collaborative learning, administer agricultural apprenticeships, and coordinate on-farm research. We also offer one of the largest and most comprehensive sustainable agriculture conferences in the nation.

JOB DESCRIPTION: The Communications Strategist will develop and maintain a portfolio of communication platforms and products that serve to connect members of the PASA community and extend the impact of our educational programs to broader audiences.


  • Ensure communications of the organization are mission-aligned and further the principles of sustainable agriculture.

  • Develop and maintain a consistent branding and messaging strategy for use across all programming.

  • Manage the production of hard copy outreach materials, including fact sheets, press releases, reports, and other educational products (ideally, to include a seasonal sustainable agriculture journal). Generate visual aids that highlight our programming and make our research findings accessible to the general public.

  • Oversee content and design, as well as devising protocol for, the organization’s website, (currently mid-redesign).

  • Produce a biweekly e-newsletter that includes program highlights, member profiles, and event announcements.

  • Include conference and event advertising and promotion in comprehensive communications strategy.

  • Manage a growing social media presence for the organization.

  • Contribute to writing grant proposals and grant reports.

  • Generate photos and videos from our events that can be used to highlight our programming.

  • Work closely with the Directors of Education and Development, as well as our entire Education & Research team, to ensure communications reflect an effective and cohesive organizational message.


  • Bachelor’s degree in a communications, public relations, or related area, ideally with real-life experience in agricultural or environmental science field. Preference will be given to those with prior experience in agriculture.

  • At least three years of applicable experience.

  • Excellent written, oral and visual communications skills.

  • Thorough understanding of current topics and challenges in sustainable agriculture.

  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.

  • Experience with website management,  social media platforms and development of a diverse portfolio of communications materials.

  • Ability to maintain a high level of accountability, to be a solid team player and to have a high level of commitment to PASA’s mission is a must!

SUPERVISION: This position will be supervised by the executive director.

LOCATION: The Communications Strategist will be an integral part of our dedicated team which works across the state of Pennsylvania. Availability to work at PASA’s headquarters in Millheim, Pennsylvania, is expected, but working remotely across the state in order develop a deep understanding of our work is anticipated. Regular work location is negotiable. An orientation period at our Central, Western and Eastern Pennsylvania locations and participation in our 2018 Farming for the Future Conference (February 7-10) is required.

COMPENSATION:  This is a full-time, exempt, salaried position in the range of $45-50K. Excellent benefits package.
