Keynote Speaker

The #GLAG17 keynote speaker is Dr. Richard Slimbach, Professor of Global Studies and Coordinator of the Global Studies Program at Azusa Pacific University. He founded Azusa’s Los Angeles Term, Global Learning Term, and MA in Transformational Urban Leadership (MATUL) programs, the latter focused exclusively on the planet’s one billion slum dwellers. Slimbach holds a Ph.D. in comparative and international education from UCLA and is the author of Becoming World Wise (Stylus, 2010) and the upcoming The Art of World Learning (Stylus, 2017).

Following graduation from Humboldt State University, Slimbach served in a number of community-based organizations working with migrant farmers, homeless men, border communities, and Vietnamese refugees. The tutoring connection led to graduate studies in TESOL and eventually to two years dedicated to occupational literacy program development among Muslim cycle rickshaw drivers in Hyderabad, India. Upon returning to the U.S., Slimbach completed UCLA’s doctoral program in comparative and international education. His dissertation examined non-formal educational development among the Baloch people of Karachi, Pakistan.

Since 1991, Slimbach’s professional energies have been dedicated to creating, teaching in, and managing academic programs aimed at preparing students to learn in socio-cultural settings radically different from their own. Study and teaching specialties include urban sociology, applied anthropology, global issues, and international education program design. Slimbach currently directs the Global Learning Term—a self-directed, full-immersion study and service abroad program that has enabled global studies students to conduct small-scale community research and academic service-learning projects in over 50 non-western countries.

Slimbach’s passion is to cultivate within the next generation a fair share of responsibility for the fate of the poor and the planet. In his spare time, he enjoys converting castaway bicycles into fixed-gear commuters. He lives with Leslie, partner of 33 years, and their two children (Justus and Destinae) in Monrovia, California.
