It is with great sadness that we report the passing of a dear friend and colleague. Dr. Milton Hallberg, Professor Emeritus of Agricultural Economics passed away November 15, 2012. Services were held on November 30, 2012 at Koch Funeral Home in State College, Pa.

Mark Brennan named UNESCO Chair in Rural Community, Leadership, and Youth Development

Penn State and the College of Agricultural Sciences have been selected by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to establish a UNESCO Chair in Rural Community, Leadership, and Youth Development. Dr. Mark Brennan will serve as Chair and lead the program.

Yetkin Borlu’s research proposal been selected in the Master’s Thesis and Dissertation Research Award Competition by the Rural Sociology Society. In his dissertation research, Borlu is studying the socioeconomic transformation in Turkey in the 2000s that resulted with the loss of nearly 3,000,000 agricultural jobs. The particular focus of his research is the expansion of industrial maize production in this period and the related transformation in social dynamics from a development model based on rural welfare to a model based on competitive markets.
