Agricultural and Extension Education Major

A degree in Agricultural and Extension Education can help prepare you for education and leadership positions in agriculture including working in schools and colleges, cooperative extension, business, trade and professional associations, and government agencies.

Two options are available for students:

It's about working with youth and adults in agriculture, agribusiness, and natural resources. It's about working with applied agricultural science in education or communities and leadership areas. It's about working in positions where teaching, leadership development, and communication skills are important.

Currently, agricultural education teachers are needed at the secondary level to teach students these important skills related to agricultural systems / mechanics. Career opportunities are available for individuals that understand the agricultural systems / mechanics content and are able to teach this content to others. Topics, taught at the secondary level, often include equipment maintenance and repair, small engine repair, surveying, electrical systems/wiring, woodworking and construction trades, welding, drafting, and concrete and masonry skills.

Teaching Certification

The Department of Agricultural and Extension Education offers a Pennsylvania Department of Education approved program for individuals seeking to meet certification requirements. This program leads to an Instructional I teaching certificate to teach agriculture and/or general science, or agriculture and environmental education and/or general science in Pennsylvania’s public schools.
