Free Tax Preparation Help for Low-income Families
Posted: February 18, 2011
The program assists low-income individuals and families with preparing and filing their tax returns. Anyone with a gross income of $49,000 or less for the 2010 tax year can take advantage of this program. This year, in addition to financial tips to stretch available income, participants will receive a one-page, personal summary designed to decode the tax form into common language.
Applicants are not eligible for services if they have unresolved issues with the IRS (e.g., owing back taxes), if they are nonresident aliens, or if they are filing as sole proprietors of a business with more than $10,000 of expenses. Returns are filed electronically, which means any refunds arrive quickly in the mail -- and even faster if deposited directly into a checking or savings account.
Sessions will be held in 10 Ferguson Building, near the corner of Shortlidge and Curtin Roads. Appointments are available from 5 to 8 p. m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays; and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. To schedule an appointment, call 814-863-7448 between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
